2nd Year of Collaboration between HellasVeg & WPI: VeggieMap Development

The Hellenic Vegetarian Association, HellasVeg, is delighted to announce the renewal of its collaboration with the leading American university  Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) for the second consecutive year. Our shared goal? The evolution of VeggieMap, the ultimate digital guide for vegetarianism in Greece.

How did the need for a vegetarian map arise?

HellasVeg’s 2022 research highlighted a significant gap: the lack of sufficient vegetarian main course options in restaurants. This makes daily life difficult for vegans, vegetarians, and flexitarians looking to reduce their meat consumption. The HellasVeg veggie map was created to provide a solution, offering easy access to vegan-friendly spots across the country.

What’s new in this year’s collaboration?

A team of four WPI students, as part of their academic requirements, will spend two months in Thessaloniki. They will work on a new, interactive platform designed to make finding a vegetarian meal extremely user-friendly through:

1. Advanced Filters: Search by area, cuisine type, and dining category.

2.Mobile-Friendly Experience: A mobile-optimized website based on visual stories.

3.Interactivity: Features for public comments, customer reviews, and menu accuracy verification.

4.Personalization: A “Favorites” function to save visited locations and discover special dishes and recipes.

From Theory to Practice

The map’s new features will be tested “in the field” through consumer surveys and dedicated focus groups with partner restaurants in Thessaloniki. This ensures the final tool fully meets the needs of both the public and the restaurants. Throughout this effort, HellasVeg will support the students to ensure the project’s success.
We continue to map the future of nutrition in Greece, making vegetarianism accessible in every corner of the country!

Stay tuned for all the updates regarding the upgrade of VeggieMap!!!
