Press Release: More than 200 organizations are calling on the EU to stop the restrictions on labeling plant-based foods.

European Alliance Calls on Parliament to Reject Commission’s Proposal to Ban Terms like “Burger” and “Sausage” from Plant-Based Products

A broad coalition of NGOs, consumer organizations, environmental groups, and food companies in Europe is joining forces against the proposed restrictions on the naming of plant-based products on supermarket shelves.

The European Commission proposes a ban on the use of 29 words such as “bacon,” “chicken,” or “beef” for plant-based alternatives, and the European Parliament is currently considering adding terms like “burger,” “sausage,” and “steak” to the list of prohibited names.

The Commission argues that consumers get confused when they see these words on plant-based products. However, to date, no substantial evidence has been presented to support this argument. On the contrary, terms like “plant-based burger,” “vegan sausage,” or “plant-based bacon” help consumers understand how to use and enjoy these sustainable alternatives.

A study by the European Consumer Organization BEUC showed that most consumers agree with the use of current names.

The issue of labeling for plant-based alternatives has also reached the European Court (case C-438/23), where a 2024 ruling stated that current legislation is adequate to protect consumers.

Despite this, the ban on these terms is back on the table. Over 200 organizations representing consumers, environmental and animal welfare groups, the food industry, and civil society have already rallied behind the “No Confusion” campaign (https://www.noconfusion.org/). Together, they urge Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to reject this proposal in the upcoming critical vote on October 7 and for the European Commission to withdraw its proposal permanently. The campaign is coordinated by WePlanet and EVU, which includes HellasVeg, and is supported by leading NGOs, food companies, and consumer organizations.

Statements

European Vegetarian Union (EVU)

“It is clear that consumers are not confused by a ‘plant-based sausage,’ a ‘burger,’ or a ‘plant-based chicken,'” said Rafael Pinto from the European Vegetarian Union (EVU). “On the contrary, these terms help them understand how to cook and enjoy sustainable alternatives. Banning them will protect no one; it will only create confusion and slow down Europe’s transition to healthier, climate-friendly diets. It may also harm European farmers who produce the raw materials for these foods, such as soy, peas, and other crops.”

Hellenic Vegetarian Association (HellasVeg)

“People know exactly what they are buying when they choose a veggie burger or a plant-based sausage. These names make it easier—not harder—for consumers to understand and choose sustainable solutions. At HellasVeg, we strongly support fair labeling that respects consumer choice and encourages innovation.”

Why It Matters

  • Europe is facing a climate and biodiversity crisis, where food systems are a critical factor.
  • Plant-based foods are part of the solution, helping people reduce emissions and pressure on the land while preserving familiar tastes and forms.
  • The Commission’s proposal would deprive citizens of clear and understandable language, making it harder to choose sustainable solutions. At the same time, it would burden the industry with costly renaming across the sector, jeopardizing jobs.

Call to Action

The alliance calls on the European Parliament to defend consumers, innovation, and sustainability by rejecting this proposal.
